- Fergen Family of the Black Forest : Reichstag, Germany, Chicago: The Great Depression and the city life of Chicago. Although resources were strained, the immigrant’s lives were better in America than in the countries from which they had come. As they settled in the cities they formed ethnic neighborhoods with others from their native land. At crucial points in the past, military prowess has established the role of the United States as a world power, but the character of its society has been even more important in defining its influence. The millions of immigrants who passed through Ellis Island in New York anticipated that in “the land of the free and home of the brave” they would enjoy opportunities not available from where they had come. For those who remained in their own countries, America has served as an important example of political and economic freedom.
- Settlers of Cupheag: Fairchild Genealogy : Pilgrims; Macs Harbor. The shores of Cupheag where cellars were dug into the banks of Stratford Harbor for original shelters and land was purchased from the Indians.
- The Ancestors and Descendants of the Turuc and Schlacter Families : Romania and Yugoslavia Families in Chicago: Turuc, Mandula, Schlacter. The tyranny of Communism in Romania and Yugoslavia. Not all of the family members survived or were able to become Free World Citizens. America and it’s allies had won WWII against Nazi Germany and Japan and had rebuilt Western Europe and the Far East into very prosperous, democratic societies. For more than 40 years, however, it could not win the Cold War against the Bolsheviks from Moscow that had enslaved more than 120 million people behind the Iron Curtain–food shortages, brainwashing education in Marxist-Leninist ideology, forced labor disguised as volunteerism, and primitive healthcare.
